When López arrived as a student at UCSD, she discovered that she was the only student of color in the visual arts department, and although she found supportive faculty members, peers were dismissive of, it not openly hostile to her work. Her series ¿A Dónde Vas, Chicana? attests to the challenges of survival of the predominantly white institution. The series' acrylic-and-oil paintings shows the Runner- López herself- as a picture of strength, vitality, and movement in contrast with concrete backdrop of modernist architecture, an institution and its oppressive structures. López's journey to physical empowerment of running miles through the campus and out was a transformative experience, whom López discovered that "body could be a tool in my freedom."
