In 2015, Hung Liu (1948-2021) turned her attention to the Great Depression-era images by American Photographer Dorothea Lange. Liu recognized her own life in Lange's photographs of Dust Bowl migrants and created paintings like Valentine's Day (2019) to consider the photographer's well-known images with broader histories of migration, immigration, and displacement.
Valentine's Day (2019) is currently on view at the San José Museum of Art: Hung Liu, Valentine’s Day, 2019. Oil on canvas, 80 × 80 inches. Gift of the Lipman Family Foundation, in memory of Hung Liu. 2021.05.01. Image courtesy of Walter Gallery
